New Leadership Addresses Bureau Of Prisons Employee Misconduct

It has been nearly five years since Associated Press journalists Michael Balsamo and Michael Sisak reported on the number of Federal Bureau of Prisons employees who had been arrested for criminal acts. The charges ranged from a warden indicted for sexual abuse, an associate warden charged with murder, guards taking cash to smuggle drugs and weapons, and supervisors stealing property such as tires and tractors.

There have been many “Firsts” in the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). The first director of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) was Sanford Bates who got the job in 1930. Charles Samuels was the first African American director and Kathleen Hawk Sawyer was the first woman director. Now, a Deputy Director has been named to the BOP and that too will be a first.

Bureau Of Prisons Stumbles On Reducing Costs On Incarceration

In December 2018, the United States Congress overwhelmingly adopted the First Step Act, which then-President Donald Trump signed into law. The law provided a way to allow inmates to earn credits toward reducing their sentence by up to a year by participating in programming and productive activities. In addition, credits could be earned to allow inmates to serve an unlimited amount of time on home confinement based on the number of credits they earned.

Bureau Of Prisons Facility In Oregon Is Focus Of Government Report

The Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released a report of FCI Sheridan, one of the federal Bureau of Prisons complexes located across the United States. The report highlighted problem areas specifically at Sheridan but most are simply challenges that exist across the BOP. The report reflects the results of another unannounced inspection of a BOP facility (see reports here for Tallahassee and Waseca).

With ‘Eternal Gratitude’ Bureau Of Prisons Honors Fallen

May 7, 2024 started as a gray day at Washington D.C.’s National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial park where the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) honored 26 fellow corrections officers and contractors who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The two most recent casualties were those of Eric J. Williams and Osvaldo Albarati who were killed on consecutive days at two different institutions in February 2013. Williams died while working at USP Canaan where he was attacked and killed by an inmate and Albarati was ambushed and killed while he was driving home from work. After an investigation it was determined that Albarati’s shooting was carried out with assistance from federal inmates housed at MDC Guaynabo who relayed information by cell phones to assailants outside the prison.
