Trump Makes News With More Pardons And Commutations

During his first term, President Donald Trump issued a total of 238 pardons and commutations (143 pardons and 85 commutations). Like presidents before him, the majority of those receiving commutations had served a significant part of their prison term while most all of those pardoned had completed their sentence years ago. In fact, most executive orders for commutations come in the final days of the administration, not at the beginning.

Office Of Inspector General Critical Of Federal Prison Medical Care

This month, the Department of Justice Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz announced the release of an evaluation assessing the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ practices regarding colorectal cancer (screenings for inmates and the follow-up care provided after positive screenings. The DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General identified significant operational and managerial shortcomings that the BOP must address to ensure inmates receive appropriate screening and treatment for CRC.

With ‘Eternal Gratitude’ Bureau Of Prisons Honors Fallen

May 7, 2024 started as a gray day at Washington D.C.’s National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial park where the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) honored 26 fellow corrections officers and contractors who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The two most recent casualties were those of Eric J. Williams and Osvaldo Albarati who were killed on consecutive days at two different institutions in February 2013. Williams died while working at USP Canaan where he was attacked and killed by an inmate and Albarati was ambushed and killed while he was driving home from work. After an investigation it was determined that Albarati’s shooting was carried out with assistance from federal inmates housed at MDC Guaynabo who relayed information by cell phones to assailants outside the prison.

Congress Issues Subpoenas On Inmate Tied To Hunter Biden

Two members of Congress Jim Jordan (R-OH), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and James Comer (R-KY) chair of the House Oversight Committee, issued letters to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York and BOP Director Colette Peters seeking information on whether or not there was interference with Galanis’ ability to get home confinement. The interference, the member of Congree believe, relates to information Galanis has on his former business partner Hunter Biden. Those letters received no response and now subpoenas for additional documentation were sent Friday to both the BOP and Southern District of New York.

Bureau Of Prisons Ends Contract With American Correctional Association

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) did not renew its contract the the American Correctional Association (ACA). ACA specializes in providing accreditation services for correctional facilities at various levels, including state, local, federal, and private institutions.
