Trump Makes News With More Pardons And Commutations

During his first term, President Donald Trump issued a total of 238 pardons and commutations (143 pardons and 85 commutations). Like presidents before him, the majority of those receiving commutations had served a significant part of their prison term while most all of those pardoned had completed their sentence years ago. In fact, most executive orders for commutations come in the final days of the administration, not at the beginning.

Office Of Inspector General Critical Of Federal Prison Medical Care

This month, the Department of Justice Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz announced the release of an evaluation assessing the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ practices regarding colorectal cancer (screenings for inmates and the follow-up care provided after positive screenings. The DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General identified significant operational and managerial shortcomings that the BOP must address to ensure inmates receive appropriate screening and treatment for CRC.

Steve Bannon To Be Released From Prison This Week, Right On Time

Steve Bannon, an advisor to President Donald Trump and his campaign, was sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress after he refused to cooperate with a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 Committee. He is scheduled to be released October 29, having served his full 120 day sentence. Since the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has a number of ways to reduce the time in prison, many wonder why Bannon has served his entire sentence at FCI Danbury in Connecticut.

Bureau Of Prisons To Restrict Mass Emails To Prisoners

In March 2020, the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General issued a report on the concerns of mass emails through its Trulinks (also called Corrlinks) email system to the general population. The Trulinks email system is used by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) inmates to communicate with families and friends. The emails do not allow for photos or attachments, but are simply text messages that provide information and updates. Over the years, the system has been used to communicate information to a broader group of prisoners related to BOP policy, legal actions and general information on incarceration.
